Baby, lots to know!

The First Trimester
Beginning the end of April
Week 1: Placenta begins to form and blood circulates
Week 2: Baby's head is detectable
Week 3: Early heartbeats. Facial features and lungs begin. Tiny buds that will form the arms then legs appear. Eyes, liver and digestive system begin.
Week 4: Primitive mouth appears.
Week 5:Oral and nasal cavities forming. Cerebellum and spleen begin to develop. Digital rays (early fingers) developing.
Week 6: Eyelids begin to form. Tip of nose is now distinct. Buds of genitals begin.
Week 7: External genetalia still in sexless state.
Week 8: Baby no longer an embryo, now begins the fetal period.
Week 9: Baby' face has human profile
Week 10: Fetus is swallowing and absorbing fluids. Fingernails are developing. (YEAH!)
Week 11: Intestines are contained within the abdomen. Vocal cords develop.
Week 12: Using a doppler you can hear the baby's heart. The baby is about 4 and 1/2 inches long and weighs about 1 and 1/2 ounces.
Week 13: Fetal movement called Quickening may be felt.
Week 14: Limb movements become coordinated. Head is now erect. Slow eye movements begin. Baby can blink, suck and swallow.

We felt the baby kicking for the first time on August 5,1999. We think he/she was doing the Cha-Cha.

The Second Trimester
Week 15: Baby is about 6 and 1/4 inches and weighs 4-5 oz. As of August 15th my (Heather's) waist is 37 inches around.
Week 16: Baby is 7 inches and his/her body growth is catching up to his/her head. The lower limbs are lengthening and the bones are becoming ossified. Ears are standing out from head.
Week 17: Baby is 8 inches head to toe and weighs 8 oz. Did you know that baby receives its nutrients 1-2 hours after mommy eats?
Week 18: Baby is 9 and 3/4 inches and weighs 10 oz. Baby's skin is coated with vernix (a cheesy substance) to protect against chapping, abrasions, and hardening. If it is a girl the uterus is formed.
Week 19: HALFWAY THERE!!!
Week 20: Baby is 10 and 1/2 inches and weighs 1 lb. Lanugo (fine downy hair) covers the baby's body. Eye brows are visible. Brown fat which keeps the baby warm develops. If baby is a boy testes begin to descend.
Week 21: Baby is 11 inches head to toe. The baby can hear my heartbeat and stomach. Rapid eye movement has begun.

September 23, 1999 I SAW the baby move for the first time!

Week 22: Baby is 11 and 1/4 inches head to toe.
Week 23: Baby may have blink-startle responses when he/she hears a loud noise.
Week 24: The baby is 12 inches head to toe and weighs 1lb 12oz. Fingernails are now present! Lungs begin to manufacture surfactant, which keeps lung tissue from sticking to itself. Baby's brain continues rapid growth.
Week 25: Baby is 12 1/2 inches head to toe.
Week 26:Baby's almost 13 inches head to toe. Baby's eyelids open and have eyelashes.
Week 27: Baby is 13 and 3/4 inches head to toe. Lungs are developed enough to breathe air. Toenails are now visible. Baby likes to suck his/her thumb. He/she is developing a layer of fat under the skin.
Week 28: Babys 14 inches head to toe and weighs about 3 pounds.

The Third Trimester
Week 29: Baby is 14 3/4 inches head to toe. Baby's grasp is well developed, he/she comforts itself by sucking its thumb.
Week 30: Baby G is 15 1/4 inches head to toe and weighs about 3 lb 12 oz. He/she is getting used to family/friend voices. The brain and nerves are developing and directing bodily functions.
Week 31; Baby is 15 3/4 inches long and weighs about 4 lbs 5 oz. Baby's pupils can constrict.
Week 32: Baby is about 16 inches long and weighs about 4 lbs 11 oz. FINGERNAILS REACH THE TIP OF THE FINGERS! Baby's skin is pink and smooth. Sleeping patterns are developing.
Week 33: Babys length is 16 1/2 inches and weight is 5 lbs. Baby is putting on fat. (but Mommy isn't!)
Week 34: The kid is 17 1/4 inches long and weighs 5 lbs 9 oz. The last month of gestation begins!!!!! Baby gains weight rapidly this month (1/2 - 3/4 lb per week). Baby has dropped.
Week 35: Baby's length is 17 1/2 inches.
Week 36: Baby is 18 1/2 inches and weighs about 6 1/2 lbs. Lanugo hair is mostly gone. Toenails reach the tip of the toes.
Week 37: Baby G is 19 inches head to toe and weighs about 7 lbs. (could weigh 1-3 lbs more). Vernix is mostly gone. Heel creases are present.
Week 38: 38 weeks gestation, 40 weeks LMP that's all folks!!!!!! Due to mild PIH (pregnancy induced hypertension), and the inability to gain or even hold on to weight, I am scheduled to be induced Monday night/Tuesday Morning the 17/18th (unless something starts before then). So sometime Tuesday the 18th of January (Weds at the latest) we will be the proud parents of a healthy baby. The doctor predicts an 8 lbs + baby. Exciting isn't it?

IT'S A GIRL!!!!

Rebecca Nicole Goodson was born by emergency C section, Tuesday January 18th at 2:00. She weighed 7 lbs 8 oz and was 19 1/2 inches long. She scored 9 on the APGAR test (10 is highest).

The Shower Dates Were:
November 7,1999 at 12:00. Given by the 3 Grandmas, Suzette Devol, Bonne Hill and Judy Knedel.
December 5,1999 AT 2:00. Given by "the Girls".
